Description: A farm scene in Medina County. Two prominent farms, the Heritage Farm and the Elm Farm, are located in Medina County. The Heritage Farm is a mid 19th century farm in the Ohio Western Reserve area of Ohio. It consists of a house, privy, carriage house, corn crib, granary, equipment shed, barn, milk house and chicken house. Elm farm was purchased by a master plumber, Henry Abell, in 1927. When no plumbing work was available in 1934, he developed the dairy farm, eventually growing it to 500 acres. Now it is the American Ice Cream and Dairy Museum. View on Ohio Memory.

The farm probably was located along Route 303 (Center Rd.) in Hinckley Township, Ohio. It is not known if this farm still exists. Hinckley Township is one of the seventeen townships of Medina County, Ohio, United States, located in the northeast corner of the county. The 2000 census found 6,753 people in the township. It has a total area of 26.9 square miles. The township became known across Ohio and the United States as the home of the buzzards. On March 15 of every year, buzzards arrive in large flocks at the town, as if on a very exact biological clock. The town began celebrating the arrival of the birds in 1957, and today as many as 50,000 visitors visit the Hinckley Reservation in the town annually on "Buzzard Day" to witness the return of the avian residents. The event is used to mark the beginning of spring for Hinckley and the surrounding towns. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of "They Came as Wadsworth’s First Settlers After the War of 1812" by F. Thornton Martin in 1938. The painting is located at the post office in Wadsworth, Ohio in Medina County. The photo is from the Ohio Post Office Artwork Collection, AV 48. The collection represents thirty murals or plaster reliefs installed in twenty-five Ohio post offices between 1937 and 1943. In 1988, Connie Girard photographed the artwork. Photos were published in the article “Not By Bread Alone, Post Office Art of the New Deal.” Timeline. June-July 1989, p. 2-19 by Gerald Markowitz and Marlene Park. In 1932, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President he promised Americans a "New Deal" and created public works programs to provide jobs for the millions of unemployed people, including artists. Ten thousand unknown and established artists were commissioned by the government to create murals, paintings, photographs, posters, prints and sculpture. The goal was not only to employ artists, but also to bring fine art into the daily lives of all people. The Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was funded for six months in 1933 – 1934. The PWAP was succeeded by the Treasury Department’s Section of Painting and Sculpture. Organized in 1934 the Section of Painting and Sculpture operated until 1943. Under the auspices of this organization sixty-six new Ohio post offices received artwork. The majority of the post offices were located in small towns. Post offices were chosen as a location for artwork because, particularly in small towns, they were centers of community activity. Most of the painted murals or murals in plaster relief created are realistic images reflecting the history, common activities or major industries of the communities in which the post offices are located. Description: Taken by photographer Ihna Thayer Frary in 1925, this photograph shows the Congregational Church in Weymouth, Ohio. Built in 1835, it was the oldest church in Medina County. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1873, Ihna Thayer Frary was a prominent American art and architecture scholar, whose primary interest was the architectural heritage of the region of northeastern Ohio known as the Western Reserve. In addition to serving as publicity and membership secretary of the Cleveland Museum of Art, he was a professor of Ohio and American architecture at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University’s School of Architecture. Over the course of his career, Frary was a design consultant for private clients and designed furniture, and was an active member of several prominent arts councils in the Cleveland area. In 1963, Frary and his two sons donated his entire photographic collection to the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection). The Ihna Thayer Frary Collection consists of 4,000 5 x 7 photographs of private residences, churches, taverns, and public buildings, as well as select rural buildings, bridges, archaeological sites, and public monuments.
